Raw Hair vs Remy Hair vs Processed Hair: The Honest Comparison

Walk into any hair shop in South Africa and you will see all three. Raw hair. Remy hair. Processed hair. They look similar in the packet. They are described using similar language. But they are fundamentally different products, and the difference becomes very clear within months of purchase.

This post gives you the honest comparison.

Processed Hair

Processed hair is the most common type of hair sold in wigs and extensions worldwide. It is collected from multiple donors, mixed together, then put through a chemical treatment process to make it look uniform and feel silky.

The chemicals used typically include acid baths that strip the cuticle, silicone coatings that create an artificial smoothness, and sometimes bleaching or colouring treatments.

The result looks beautiful in the packet. But once the silicone coating washes away, usually within the first few washes, the damaged, cuticle-stripped hair underneath begins to tangle, mat, and shed. Most processed wigs have a lifespan of 3 to 6 months with regular wear.

Processed hair is the cheapest option and the most widely available. It is also the most frequently disappointing.

Remy Hair

Remy hair is a significant step up from processed hair. The key feature of Remy hair is that the cuticles are kept intact and all aligned in the same direction. This is what prevents the most severe tangling.

However and this is important: Remy hair is still processed. It has still been treated chemically. The cuticles are aligned, but they may not be completely intact. The processing still weakens the hair structure compared to completely raw hair.

Remy hair typically lasts 6 to 12 months with good care — significantly better than processed hair, but still not in the same category as raw hair.

Raw Hair

Raw hair is the highest quality human hair available. It has never been chemically treated. The cuticles are completely intact, naturally aligned, and undamaged. The hair is exactly as it was on the donor's head.

Because nothing has been done to the hair, nothing can wash away. The softness, the movement, the density, these are all natural properties of the hair itself. They do not deteriorate the way processed or Remy hair does.

With proper care, raw hair lasts 3 years or more. Some women report their raw hair units still performing beautifully after 5 years.

The Price Reality

Here is the honest financial comparison for South African women:

Processed wig: R800 to R1,500. Needs replacing every 3 to 6 months. Annual cost: R1,600 to R6,000.

Remy wig: R1,500 to R3,000. Lasts 6 to 12 months. Annual cost: R1,500 to R6,000.

Raw Vietnamese wig (The House of Wigs): R2,800. Lasts 3 years. Annual cost: R933.

Raw hair is not the expensive option. It is the most economical option when you calculate the full cost of ownership.

The Bottom Line

Processed hair: Looks beautiful for weeks. Disappoints for months. Remy hair: Better quality, still has limitations, still processed. Raw hair: The real thing. Costs more upfront. Costs less over time. Performs for years.

The House of Wigs sells raw hair only. Because it is the only option we can stand behind completely.
